March 23
All Areté students:
First and foremost, we hope that you and your family are safe and well. As you have heard from WHS administration, class assignments are going to be issued by admin for the next two weeks. (See WHS website -- as of 9am on 3/23, it's not posted yet). In the meantime, Mr Stef and Ms. Raszler and I are making plans for class assignments that are relevant and interesting while you're at home. We're figuring out media production opportunities for while you're at home.
Mostly, we miss you all and would love to hear from you and see you on line. Feel free to email me. And stay safe.

Summary of where we are in the semester.
First Grading Period:
Introduction to After Effects
Capstone project: Kinetic Typography
Second Grading Period (where we are right now):
More After Effects: character animation
Capstone project: Lessons of US History
Today (continuation/completion of Monday): today's work is taken from 3:40 to 6:40 of this tutorial
Basic steps:
Create basic character in Illustrator
In Illustrator, create layers and move various shape path body parts into that layers. Label layers
Import Illustrator file into After Effects. Make sure you import it as a Composition. That way the different layers are kept discreet for animation
In AE, move anchor point to appropriate hinge point for body part.
Keyframe animation with Rotation, Scale, etc.
Note: This character could be used in your lesson of history animation. But that is not mandated.

Turnabout sketches checked
Introduction to Illustrator. Illustrator is a drawing program using vector images, which means your creations can be increased/decreased without losing resolution. The goal here is to easily created a reasonable version of your sketched character in Illustrator. The secondary goal is to import it into After Effects to begin to animate it. Here is a beginning tutorial.
Multimedia 2: since you have experience with Illustrator, please assist multimedia 1 as needed.
Open up Adobe Illustrator, and create a simple character. On separate layers, group elements of for each arm, each leg, a torso and a head. Illustrator automatically separates elements onto separate layers.
Watch this tutorial on two different ways to animate a two-dimentional character, if you haven't already

If you're still finishing up your Kinetic Typography Project, here are some important tips as you perfect the performance of your project.
1) Principle of Alignment. This project doesn't work unless the chunks of phrases are artfully assembled with alignment, usually on the left and right. This necessitates resizing individual words, and that makes the phrases more interesting to look at. The architecture of the phrase, the sentence is what makes kinetic typography work.
2) And then moving the whole phrase together is what makes it look cool.
3) I saw some good examples of individual words getting independent animation for emphasis.
4) Download an original font to execute the project. Chunkier, blockier fonts work best.
5) Make sure your sound is coordinated
6) Final editing with sound is best done in Premier Pro, so you can mix sound track, sound f/x and music

Homework: Drawing a Character Turnaround
A character turnaround is a visual reference that shows a character from at least three angles. Turnarounds are essential for mediums that will be showing characters in the round, such as animation and comics. You will be drawing a front view, a 3/4 front view, and a profile/side view
On a piece of paper, draw horizontal straight lines for top of head, bottom of head, end of hands, waist, knees and bottom of feet. It can be creative and out of proportion. Sketch a character front view, then 3/4 front and side using the same proportions. Due for check on Wednesday; it will be the basis for a character creation in Adobe Illustrator that will be begun in class on Wednesday

If you haven't done so, turn in an EXPORTED draft of your kinetic typography, with whatever naming convention Mr Evans suggests.
There is an additional mashup of student work here
Continue to work on your kinetic typography
Some tips and hints:
Detailed sound coordination with your animation is key
Try various animation presets with key words
These final animations are due this Thursday / Friday (Feb 20/21)

Review tutorial with Mr Evans
Record your quote and import sound into After Effects
Begin to animate
Please refer to project page for details and hints
This is detail work; your animation will look great if you stay focused on the task of carefully keyframing with the words / sounds of your spoken track
You will be exporting your progress at the end of the next class (Feb 13/14) to turn in for a progress grade.

Create animatic of Transcendental School Ad, with voice over. Should include titling, zooming and panning to simulate action.
Fundamentals of storyboarding
- Every frame represents a camera shot / 3-5 of running time
- Use XCU, CU, MCU, MS, MLS, LS, XLS descriptions and appropriate sketch depth.
- Use squares and circles to depict body parts if uncomfortable with realistic sketching (NO STICK FIGURES)
- Hollow arrows to depict camera movement (if applicable). Line arrows to show character / object movement within frame.
- Note sound inclusion where applicable (sound f/x, music, narration)

We (Areté Multimedia 2 students) have been asked to design for the Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic. They are looking for some mockups by this Friday (A day) and Monday (B day). They realize these are mockups (first drafts) and they will come back to you with feedback. This is a graded effort too
1) The client wants to see what you have to offer. Hearing the term Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic, what do you think? What creative impulse sparks in you?
2) Obviously, an original image is everything*
Designs are primarily for T-shirts which patrons will buy.
Other design considerations: Sonoma County landmarks? Flamingo? (sponsorship) 30 year celebration
Iterations for Volunteer T-shirts, lapel pins
From client email:
"We have thrown around ideas of including some Sonoma County Landmarks and try to incorporate them into the design some how. We need to include a Pink Flamingo somewhere as the Flamingo is one of our sponsors... but I really would like them to get creative in this first round of mock ups.
Hearing - Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic - what do they think? what creativity sparks in them?
It will be our 30 year celebration, we are moving to a new venue, we are going to be offering some new things, new ideas, we are looking forward to exciting times.
We are looking at designs for t-shirts that patrons would buy. I also need a Volunteer T-shirt something that says CREW on it or VOLUNTEER or my personal favorite BALLOONATEERS and we are looking for a lapel pin design. These are the items that I am looking forward to working with the students on. but there is also a possibility of the poster design as well. What we would use for marketing, programs, etc.
Really the possibilities of this are grand - but I would really like to see what they come up with."
